Ionic Air Purifiers trap air pollutants
on easy-to-clean metal collection plates

Ionic air purifiers are proven to be very effective in neutralizing bacteria, viruses, chemical fumes, and cigarette smoke. They usually create static charges or an electrical field to remove air pollutants from indoor air.

Ionic air purifiers act by charging the air pollutants in a room, so they are attracted to walls, floors, table tops, draperies, furniture, etc. In some cases, ionic air purifiers contain a metal collection plate to attract the charged pollutants back to the unit.

Ionic air purifiers Type

Electrostatic precipitators
In electrostatic precipitators, particles are collected on a series of flat plates. In most electrostatic precipitators, the particles are deliberately ionized (charged) before the collection process, resulting in a higher collection efficiency.

Charged-media filters
In charged-media filter devices, which are less common, the particles are collected on the fibers in a filter. In some of the charged-media filters, the particles are deliberately ionized (charged) before the collection process, resulting in a higher collection efficiency.

Ion generators
Ion generators generate static charges to charge the particles in a room, so they are attracted to walls, floors, table tops, draperies, occupants, etc. Abrasion can result in these particles being resuspended into the air. While ion generators may remove small particles (e.g., those in tobacco smoke) from the indoor air, they do not remove gases or odors, and may be relatively ineffective in removing large particles such as pollen and house dust allergens.

One of the disadvantages in using ionic air purifiers is that they produce a small amount of ozone, which is a lung irritant.

Ionic air purifiers shopping tip

When you shop for ionic air purifiers, be sure that the purifiers have a collection plate to collect the charged pollutants. Otherwise, the charged pollutants may re-enter the air again and re-pollute your indoor air.
