HEPA Air Filters remove harmful pollutants
For a whole house unit, the air filters may be installed in ducts in homes with
central heating and/or air-conditioning.
There are two common types of air filters used - the flat or panel air filters, and the pleated
or extended surface air filters.
Flat filters may efficiently collect large particles, but remove only a small percentage of
respirable size particles.
Pleated or extended surface filters generally attain greater efficiency for capture of respirable
size particles than flat filters. Their greater surface area allows the use of smaller fibers and an
increase in packing density of the filter without a large drop in air flow rate.
Air filters and pre-filters
Air filters that are used in portable air purifiers usually consist of pre-filters and the
HEPA filters. Prefilters are used to remove larger particles such as animal or human hair, so the
HEPA filters will not get clogged prematurely.
To help remove offensive odor, many pre-filters now come with activated carbon. These Activated Carbon
Pre-filter not only helps reduce odors but also extends the HEPA filter life.
Depending on the indoor air quality, HEPA air filters should be replaced every 1-3 years while
the activated carbon prefilters be replaced every 2-3 months.
